Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the sole TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level domain names remained functional.
